"John Sanford" is the name of the protagonist of the novel published in 1933 in The Water Wheel, by Julian L. Shapiro, and Shapiro took on the pseudonym then and there. This copy is SIGNED by "Julian," in deep affection for Jesse and Nonie, at the heavily toned first free endpaper. Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound hardcover, clean, if toned interior, minimal rubbing to extremities but a bit toned and sunned along joints, top edge. Perfectly readable, usable copy. Light brown woven cloth, red lettering over black label to spine, a bit rubbed. Measures 5 1/2" wide by 7 1/2" tall. 263 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Sanford's uncommon second novel (and the first using his nom de plume), nicely inscribed to his friend the screenwriter Max Lamb. Sanford went on to publish 24 books and several screenplays but, in the words of his bibliographer, he has remained "the finest unread author writing in English," owing in some degree to his intractability with editors but certainly also to his staunch leftist political leanings, which got him blacklisted during the McCarthy era.
