Softcover. Condición: Fine. Uncorrected Proof. Fine in wrappers. Laid in are two press releases from the publisher, discussing the controversy over Hamilton's first attempt to write Salinger's biography, *J.D. Salinger: A Writing Life*, and the lawsuit it engendered, causing him to re-write the book. Prior to publication of the book, the famously litigious Salinger sued to prevent publication of Hamilton's biography, challenging his right to publish quotations from his correspondence in the Firestone Library at Princeton University and elsewhere. On January 29, 1987, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit reversed an earlier judgment, and decided that Mr. Hamilton could not quote from the excerpts. Salinger was successful in stopping publication of the biography. Hamilton, in reaction to the decision, rewrote the biography, omitting the portions challenged by Salinger, and published the revised text under this title, *In Search of J. D. Salinger: A Writing Life*, published in 1988.

Soft cover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. Octavo, yellow wrappers printed in black, with blank rear cover. Uncorrected proof copy, 207 pages. A notoriously rare Salinger biography. Salinger had successfully stopped publication of "A Writing Life," in which Hamilton had included unpublished letters and papers. One of an estimated 65 copies, according to the Ahearns' "Author Price Guides" (1:524) and bookseller James S. Jaffe (9/93). [Together with] "In Search of J. D. Salinger" (New York: Random House, 1988). Advance uncorrected proof, with publisher's paper label on the front cover, 218 pages. "In Search" is the legal version of Hamilton's "A Writing Life" after Salinger blocked its publication. Striking copies enclosed in a custom-made box.

Softcover. Condición: Fine. Uncorrected proof. Octavo. 223pp. Printed yellow wrappers. A fine, bright copy. Hamilton, in reaction to the decision, rewrote the biography, omitting the portions challenged by Salinger, and published the revised text under the title, *In Search of J. D. Salinger*, which was published in 1988. This proof, reportedly one of about 65 copies issued (of which about one-half are in libraries), is the only published version with the suppressed excerpts.
