Trade paperback. Condición: Good. The format is approximately 5.5 inches by 8.25 inches. xxi, [3], 478, [8] pages. Footnotes. Illustrations. Appendix. Minor damp stains on bottom edge noted. Foreword by Charles A. Lindbergh. Michael Collins (October 31, 1930 - April 28, 2021) was an American astronaut who flew the Apollo 11 command module Columbia around the Moon in 1969 while his crewmates, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, made the first crewed landing on the surface. He was also a test pilot and major general in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. Born in Rome, Italy, Collins graduated in the Class of 1952 from the United States Military Academy. He joined the United States Air Force, and flew F-86 Sabre fighters at Chambley-Bussières Air Base, France. He was accepted into the U.S. Air Force Experimental Flight Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in 1960, also graduating from the Aerospace Research Pilot School (Class III). Selected as part of NASA's third group of 14 astronauts in 1963, Collins flew in space twice. His first spaceflight was on Gemini 10 in 1966, in which he and Command Pilot John Young performed orbital rendezvous with two spacecraft and undertook two extravehicular activities. On the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, he became one of 24 people to fly to the Moon. He was the first person to have performed more than one spacewalk. He became the director of the National Air and Space Museum, until 1978, when he became undersecretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Collins was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2011. Derived from a Kirkus review: Here I am, a white male, age thirty-eight, height 5 feet 11 inches, weight 165 pounds, salary $17,000 per annum, resident of a Texas suburb, with black spot on my roses, state of mind unsettled, about to be shot off to the moon. Yes, to the moon." Collins sits inside the Command Module, awaiting blast-off, pulse a calm 88. The reader, however, has come 361 pages to reach the big moment in Collins' long career. Three years earlier he'd made his first rocket ride aboard a Gemini circling the earth; had some thrilling minutes spacewalking and hairy times entangled in a 50-foot hose while trying to get back to his spacecraft. Collins covers his entire Air Force career (his life, in fact), from West Point to test piloting over the Mojave Desert; his difficulties transferring into the astronaut program; the long years of training in unexpected fields such as geology, computers, spacesuit design (his specialty); the boredom of public relations work for the program; and preparations for the moonride. Collins, you'll recall, stayed aloft in the CM while Armstrong and Aldrich went down in the landing craft. Beyond radio contact in the dark of the moon, he was one man alone with God, aware, hopeful, almost exultant. A great story well told. 40th Anniversary Edition [stated]. First printing [Stated].

First edition, second printing printed the same year of one of the finest memoirs of space travel. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in the year of publication, "For the Coffelt Boys, with all good wishes- Michael Collins December 1974." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Robert T. McCall. Foreword by Charles A. Lindbergh. Carrying the Fire: An Astronaut's Journeys was in 1974, and it is an autobiographical account by the Gemini 10 and Apollo 11 astronaut. Collins writes his own work and does not hire ghost writers, explaining that "[n]o matter how good the ghost, I am convinced that a book loses realism when an interpreter stands between the storyteller and his audience" (Collins, 2001). Indeed, Collins writing has been called "the best-written book yet by any of the astronauts" by Time magazine. The New York Times Book Review said, "No other person who has flown in space has captured the experience so vividly.â.

First edition of one of the finest memoirs of space travel. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Hardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: fine. First Edition. Octavo, 478pp., plus Appendix. Stated first printing. A very good copy in the publisher's blue cloth, with some foxing to the top edge; clean and crisp internally. In a fine dust jacket. This copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Collins on the front free endpaper: "To Fred; All the best from Michael Collins." Collins, who began his astronaut career as one of "the Fourteen," the third group of NASA astronauts, is best known for his work on Apollo 11, when he manned the orbiting spacecraft alone as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon. Signed copies are scarce, but signed first printings are genuinely rare, as the book was quickly reprinted within months of publication. An appealing copy of a significant memoir.
