"The development of the American West, with the creative activity which it inspired, is a phenomenon unique in the history of man. Despite the universal popularity of the "Wild West" in film and literature, it is difficult for contemporary man to realize that only a relatively short time ago Americans stood on the threshold of a new world with infinite potential for creative development. Illustrating his text with reproductions of an extensive collection of fine paintings and drawings, Larry Curry examines the motivation of both the pioneer and the artist moving into this new land. Nineteenth-century man's response to nature, and specifically to the West, is carefully considered in terms of aesthetic theory, literature, and exploration as well as in relation to the visual image. Mr. Curry considers the work of specific artists against such broad concepts as Romanticism, Transcendentalism, democracy, and Manifest Destiny. The great artistic significance of the period is also directly revealed in the wealth of illustrations of works by, among others, Karl Bodmer, Alfred Jacob Miller, George Catlin, Seth Eastman, George Caleb Bingham, John Mix Stanley, RUdolph Durz, Karl Wimar, Worthington Whittredge, Robinson Gifford, Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Hill, Thomas Moran, Henry F. Farney, Walter Shirlaw, Charles Russell, and Frederic Remington." - from the inner front jacket flap.
