Hardcover. Condición: Good. First Edition. The Theme Is Freedom could easily have been titled "Everything You Were Ever Taught Was Wrong."Author M. Stanton Evans challenges nearly every concept most of us have learned in history classes from elementary school to college - that our liberties stem from secular doctrines, that religious absolutes endanger freedom, and that the Bill of Rights created a "wall of separation" between religion and our public institutions. All of these teachings, states Evans, are refuted by the historical record. In heated debates over the religious right, school prayer, abortion, homosexuality, and other "social issues," it has become popular to argue that politics has no place for religious principles. Some have argued that any political theory that attempts to embrace both faith and freedom - such as American conservatism - must be incoherent, or even vicious. On these issues and others, Evans concludes, the "liberal history lesson" has misled us.Arguing both conceptually and as a matter of historical fact, Evans shows that Western liberty and America's free institutions are products of our religious faith, and cannot survive without it. He traces the development of our freedoms from the conflict of pagan and biblical religions, through the growth of British common law, to the establishment of representative bodies by religious settlers in America. The Theme Is Freedom presents a new reading of the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, the constitutional founding, and the religious clauses of the First Amendment. Evans draws the conclusion that our liberties have always been dependent on the religious traditions of the West - directly contrary to the accepted theory.Constitutional statecraft, popular sovereignty, social contract, and resistance to tyrannical power are among the matters Evans discusses. On every salient issue, The Theme Is Freedom stands conventional wisdom on its head. It will disturb some, encourage others, inform many, and above all, provide a view of American political history that liberals and conservatives alike will find provocative and surprising.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. By the time Joseph Stalin died in 1953, Communism was a rapidly spreading disease - one seemingly without a cure. Enter Dr. Frederick Schwarz, a "pathologist of Communism" who had already spent more than twenty years in the study of Communism's basic ideas. At Dr. Billy Graham's suggestion, Dr. Schwarz formed the United States Christian Anti-Communism Crusade (CACC). For the next four decades, the CACC was the steel spine of the American anti-Communist movement, helping to educate such great anti-Communist leaders as Ronald Reagan.Beating the Unbeatable Foe is Dr. Schwarz's first-hand account of his lifelong battle against Communism, his devotion to truth and freedom, and his vibrant Christian faith.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. Original Intent and the Framers of the Constitution: A Disputed Question is a unique contribution to the debate, begun by Attorney General Edwin Meese in the second Reagan administration, over the "original intentions of the Framers." Professor Jaffa agrees entirely with Meese's opinion that there is a need to confine judges to interpreting, not making law. Jaffa also agrees that original intent, rightly understood, is the only sound basis of constitutional jurisprudence. But he contends that Meese, Chief Justice William Rehnquist, and Judge Robert Bork - original intent's leading conservative proponents - have misunderstood its meaning. The Framers, and Abraham Lincoln, their greatest proponent, believed that the Constitution was anchored in the principles of natural law invoked by the Declaration of Independence. Rehnquist and Bork are moral relativists and legal positivists, says Professor Jaffa, who repudiate the very existence of natural law and deny that the Declaration of Independence has any role whatsoever in constitutional interpretation.Nearly all the great constitutional controversies of our time have swirled around the meaning of the "due process" and "equal protection" clauses of the 14th Amendment. Professor Jaffa contends that it is impossible to interpret the intent of the 14th Amendment without understanding the conflict between the principles and the compromises of the antebellum Constitution. This conflict came to a head in 1857 in the case of Dred Scott. Professor Jaffa shows that Rehnquist, Bork, and Meese have completely misunderstood that case, attributing to "substantive due process" or "judicial usurpation" what was in fact a failure on the part of the Court to understand that in a federal territory the black man's human nature gave him constitutional standing, slavery in the states to the contrary notwithstanding.Jaffa also shows that in their determined effort to avoid recourse to the Declaration in their interpretation of Dred Scott, Rehnquist, Bork, and Meese are heirs, not of the Founding Fathers but of the father of the Confederacy, John C. Calhoun. Present-day conservative jurisprudence, in its positivist rejection of the Declaration, the Framers, and Lincoln is descended from Calhoun, not the Framers. Jaffa shows in Original Intent that this jurisprudence is no more principled than its liberal opposition; it merely seeks different results.

Softcover. Condición: Good. Alexander Solzhenitsyn and six dissident colleagues who at the time of publication were still living in the USSR -- six men totally vulnerable to arrest, imprisonment, or execution by the Soviet authorities -- joined in the midseventies to write a book which surely remains the most extraordinary debate of a nation's future published in modern times. Shattering a half-century of silence, From Under the Rubble constitutes a devastating attack on the Soviet regime, a moral indictment of the liberal West, and a Christian manifesto calling for a new society -- one whose dominant values would be spiritual rather than economic. Personally edited by the Nobel Prize-winning author, fired by his own substantial contributions, From Under the Rubble articulates Solzhenitsyn's most fervent call to action. His daring, and the remarkable courage of his colleagues, is testament to the seriousness of their demand for a revolution in which one does not kill one's enemies, but in which "one puts oneself in danger for the sake of the nation! With an introduction by Max Hayward, and translated under the direction of Michael Scammell. The contributors: Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Mikhail Agursky, Evgeny Barabanov, Vadim Borisov, F. Korsakov, A.B., Igor Shafarevich.

Softcover. Condición: Good. Gateway ed. The God That Failed is a classic work and crucial document of the Cold War that brings together essays by six of the most important writers of the twentieth century on their conversion to and subsequent disillusionment with communism. In describing their own experiences, the authors illustrate the fate of leftism around the world. André Gide (France), Richard Wright (the United States), Ignazio Silone (Italy), Stephen Spender (England), Arthur Koestler (Germany), and Louis Fischer, an American foreign correspondent, all tell how their search for the betterment of humanity led them to communism, and the personal agony and revulsion which then caused them to reject it. David Engerman's new foreword to this central work of our time recounts the tumultuous events of the era, providing essential background. It also describes the book's origins and impact, the influence of communism in American intellectual life, and how the events described in The God That Failed continue to affect public discourse today.

Softcover. Condición: Good. First Edition. An award-winning philosopher uncovers the Christian foundations of modern science. Renowned historian and philosopher of science Stanley Jaki boldly illumines one of the best-kept secrets of science history- the vital role theology has historically played in fruitful scientific development. Beginning with an overview of failed attempts at a sustained science by the ancient cultures of Greece, China, India, and the early Muslim empire, Jaki shows that belief in Christ-a belief absent in all these cultures-secured for science its only viable birth starting in the High Middle Ages. In the second part of the book Jaki argues that Christian monotheism alone provides the intellectual safeguards for a valid cosmological argument, restores the sense of purpose destroyed by theories of evolution, and secures firm ethical guidelines against fearful abuses of scientific know-how.
