These sculptured columns, sometimes exceeding sixty feet in height, on which appear birds, animals, and strange unrecognizable creatures, are carved nowhere else in the world. They are unique in the small area of southeastern Alaska and western British Columbia where the Tlingit and other Indians developed a highly characteristic art style and applied it to many of their handicrafts. Totem~pole carvings illustrate legends and serve as lineage crests. While the conventionalized figures employed by the artist provide many clues to the identity of the legendary characters he has carved, the interpretation of his craftsmanship is not simple. It can be made only by those who know the native myths. The figurines symbolize both characters and events of the mythological age and the experiences and adventures of known ancestors and living persons. For example, numerous myths are told of Raven, a myth~age hero and transformer, and many of the carvings symbolize him. The legendary catastrophic world flood, the migrations, wars, and other happenings that have impressed themselves upon the people's memories have also been put into carvings. Totem poles are the largest and most spectacular but by no means the only objects on which the Northwest Coast natives have illustrated their legendary and actual history. Ingeniously made chests, ceremonial paraphernalia such as rattles, head dresses, and staffs, personal ornaments, the posts supporting the house beams, and the fronts of old plank houses have been decorated with similar symbolism.
