Sprache: Deutsch fester Pappband gr. 8;; 263 Seiten; Bibliotheksstempel auf Rückseite Haupttitel, geringe farbliche Unregelmäßigkeit von sauber abgelöster Etikette - sonst wohlerhalten; Tabellen, Karten; This book is based on research projects commissioned by the Armand Hammer Fund for Economic Cooperation in the Middle East, Tel Aviv University - With all these factors in mind, I initiated a series of meetings and discussions, starting as early as 1978, before the Camp David accords were reached, with the objective to discuss ways and means to help and encourage the peace process in the Middle East through economic cooperation. Following discussions with Prof. Haim Ben-Shahar, then President ofTel Aviv University, and with Michael Geiger, then Head of Tel Aviv University in the West Coast of the United States, I established the Armand Hammer Fund for Economic Cooperation in the Middle East. Through the initiation and planning of development projects and business programs the Fund seeks to identify areas of mutual economic interest for Israel and its neighbors, thereby providing opportunities for collaboration and the hope for peace rather than continued discord and war. This book summarizes the main programs and proposals of the Fund during its first phase of operations. Though this book is only a modest step towards peace, it is nonetheless a step in the right direction, away from war towards peace, which provides a course for the future. I will work tirelessly to encourage the realization of all the programs described herein and to see that further steps are taken on the path of regional calm. One of my remaining lifes goals is to secure a lasting world peace. Like so many worthy goals, this one will be achieved only step by step and through continued hard work. The situation in the Middle East represents a significant impediment to the realization of that dream. What follows is my effort to overcome this obstruction and so move closer to the goal of peace which I know we must all share. - - -.

"What this book wonderfully reveals is the wild, untrammeled variety of Chinese religious myths and symbols, uncontrolled by either church or state. Religion is a field for the projection of human imagination according to the needs, hopes and fears of its participants. In the Chinese case this process is relatively transparent, which makes this study of great value to our understanding of religion elsewhere.".

Maps, black and white photographic plates, xviii + 332pp, index, works cited, notes, glossary, abbreviations, very good paperback copy. "Crazy Ji: Chinese Religion and Popular Literature is the first study in any language of one of the most colourful deities in the pantheon of late imperial and modern China: Sire Ji - or, as he is better know, crazy Ji. The author uses the evolution of the cult of this eccentric deity to address central questions regarding the nature of the Chinese religious tradition, its relations to the Chinese social structure, and the role of vernacular diction and popular media in shaping religious beliefs in China." - Publisher's description.

Hardcover. Condición: Gut. Schutzumschlag. Erste Ausgabe. vii, 290 S. Orig.-Leinenband mit Schutzumschlag. "The first study in English to offer a systematic introduction to the Chinese pantheon of divinities. It challenges received wisdom about Chinese popular religion, which, until now, presented all Chinese deities as mere functionaries and bureaucrats. The essays in this volume eloquently document the existence of other metaphors that allowed Chinese gods to challenge the traditional power structures and traditional mores of Chinese society. The authors draw on a variety of disciplines and methodologies to throw light on various aspects of the Chinese supernatural. The gallery of gods and goddesses surveyed demonstrates that these deities did not reflect China's socio-political order but rather expressed and negotiated tensions within it. In addition to reflecting the existing order, Chinese gods shaped it, transformed it, and compensated for it, and, as such, their work offers fresh perspectives on the relations between divinity and society in China" (Publisher's description).
