ABOUT THIS BOOK: To his contemporaries, Shelley's name stood for religious, political, and moral anathema. Critics in the first half of our own century contnued to deplore his philosophical unorthodoxy and artistic essentricity. Mr. Rieger isolates three Shelleyan "heresies," all of them artistic in origin and all defensible. Shelley's major symbols of creative Imagination owe far less to Platonism than to occult tradition and the heresies of the early Church. And though he employed the Romantic analogy from religious sacrament to literary metaphor, in the end he denied the validity of both. Finally, he sought less to enlighten his audience than to astound and limit it--less to make his vision plain than to obscure it from the stares of the uninitiated.(Publisher).

HARDCOVER. Condición: FINE IN NEAR FINE DUST JACKET. FIRST EDITION. EDITED, WITH VARIANT READINGS, AN INTRODUCTION AND NOTES, BY JAMES RIEGER PUBLISHER'S ORIGINAL PURPLE CLOTH COVERED BOARDS WITH BLACK SPINE TITLES. BOOK IS FINE WITHOUT ANY MARKS TO THE BINDING OR THE TEXT. D.J. IS ABOUT FINE WITH A FEW TINY EDGE TEARS, SLIGHTLY RUBBED CORNERS, AND IS NOT PRICE-CLIPPED. A BEAUTIFUL CLEAN, BRIGHT, UNFADED COPY WITH NO REMAINDER MARK. This new edition of "Frankenstein." reproduces for the first time in more than a century the text of the first edition published in 1818. Professor Rieger reveals, also for the first time, evidence of Percy Shelley's interference in Mary's preparation of the manuscript. Rieger adds explanatory footnotes, a note on the text, full variants from the third edition, and Mrs. Shelley's unpublished marginalia, all of which enhance the reader's appreciation of this most unusual tale. Of equal value are the auxiliary documents associated with the book, gathered here for the first time: Mrs. Shelley's introduction to the 1831 edition; Percy Shelley's verse "Fragment" of a tale about vampires; and Polidori's influential "The Vampire".
