Il aurait été le premier occidental à explorer le fleuve Niger.

Bei seiner ersten Reise im Auftrag der African Association geriet er in Gefangenschaft, konnte jedoch mittellos fliehen. Er überlebte nur durch die Hilfe eines Afrikaners. Sein daraufhin veröffentlichter Reisebericht Travels in the Interior of Africa war damals schon ein Bestseller und gilt noch heute als Klassiker. Bei seiner zweiten Reise an den Niger, die durch die britische Regierung finanziert wurde, kam er 1806 ums Leben." En la primera parte de la obra (de la página 1 hasta la 41) describe el viaje de Houghton, que había editado el comité de la "African Association" a partir de la correspondencia de éste. En la introducción explica como un árabe llamado Shabéni había informado de la existencia de un imperio en las fuentes del río Niger y que su capital era Hausa. El comité encargó en 1790 a Houghton la exploración de la ruta del río Níger partiendo de Gambia. Prosigue (desde la página 45 hasta la 100) con "Eclaircissements sur la géographie de l'Afrique" de Jammes Rennell, que es la traducción de "Elucidations of the African Géography; from the Communications of Major Houghton and Mr. Magra; 1791. Compiled in 1793; London, 1793". Y la última parte es la narración de los viajes de Mungo Park a partir del informe de un miembro también del comité de la "African Association", Bryan-Edwards, a partir del relato del mismo explorador. Mungo Park (1771-1806), médico escocés, propuso reemprender las exploraciones de Houghton. La misión era tratar de determinar el curso del río Níger hasta las ciudades prohibidas de Tombuctú y Hausa. Partió el 22 de mayo de 1795 hacia Gambia; el 21 de junio de ese mismo año alcanzó la desembocadura y remontó el río hasta Pisania. Atravesó el lecho del Senegal; visitó Moullé, Bondou y Kaarta, donde fue detenido y tratado como esclavo durante cuatro meses. Logró escapar y sobrevivir hasta Sego. Volvió al cabo de un tiempo al Reino Unido y en 1803 dirigió una nueva expedición por el Níger y consiguió remontar 1.600 km el curso del río. Contiene noticias interesantes sobre historia natural, geografía, comercio, tráfico de esclavos .Durante los últimos años del s. XVIII se llevaron a cabo travesías al continente africano de gran interés geográfico y descubridor, aunque tuvieran las miras puestas en objetivos estrictamente económicos. La expedición del Mayor Houghton, iniciada en Octubre de 1790, tenía por finalidad penetrar en el Níger a través de Gambia, para determinar el nacimiento, curso y desembocadura del mismo, y visitar los pueblos de Tombucto y Houssa.A partir de la pag. 101 comienza el viaje de Mungo Park, sucesor de Houghton e iniciado en 1793, a la región de Tombuctú en el interior de Africa. Fue un viaje de gran esfuerzo sin alimentos ni dinero, sin armas y sin equipo auxiliar, ofreciendo en cambio cantidad de noticias recogidas en su diario, datos etnográficos, geográficos, el choque de cuturas, etc.Adornan la obra tres mapas plegados, uno con la ruta seguida por el Mayor Houghton, otro con el trazado de la expedición de Mungo Park y un mapa general de la parte septentrional del Continente Africano realizado por el Mayor Rennell.En la portada, sello antiguo de anterior propietario perteneciente a la realeza. No lo cita Brunet Piel de la época, lomera con adornos dorados y tejuelo.

London 1798. - Daniel Houghton (1740-1791) was employed in his retirement by the African Association to explore inland through West Africa with the object of reaching Timbuktu. He had reached the village of Simbing, about 150 miles north of Bamako, halfway to his goal. Nothing more was known of Houghton's fate until five years later when Mungo Park reached Simbing and was shown the site of Houghton' robbery and murder at that village (Howgego p.519).
