Paperback. Condición: Sehr gut. 304 p.: graphs. Lediglich die Seiten sind papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. Sonst aber ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar/ Only the pages are slightly browned due to the paper. Otherwise a good and clean copy. - Benjamin Franklin was a true Renaissance man and a wholly unconventional human being. The only person to sign all four major documents of the founding of the United States-the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Treaty of Alliance with France, and the Treaty of Peace with England-he preferred to be known as a printer. The Autobiography is an invaluable chronicle of Franklin's rise from a printer's apprentice to an internationally famous scientist, inventor, statesman, legislator, and diplomat. Begun as a collection of anecdotes for his son, Franklin's Autobiography distills the complex and passionate intellectual strivings of his life into a persona extolling endless industry and sober virtue; by presenting this persona to his young country for emulation, Franklin achieved a higher purpose. This edition also includes fascinating selections from Franklin's essays and letters that reveal the full range of his prodigious talents, from sage to civic improver to scientist. The cover shows Benjamin Franklin, by Charles Willson Peale, courtesy of The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Joseph and Sarah Harrison Collection. CONTENT: Essays and Letters A Receipt to make a New-England Funeral Elegy Advice to a Friend on Choosing a Mistress The Speech of Miss Polly Baker How to secure Houses, &c. from Lightning The Kite Experiment The Way to Wealth An Edict by the King of Prussia The Morals of Chess (excerpt) The Elysian Fields Information to Those who Would Remove to America (excerpt) An Address to the Public; From the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery A Miscellany of Franklin's Opinions The youngest of ten sons of a Boston soap and candle maker, Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) had little formal schooling, and was trained in adolescence as a printer's apprentice. At seventeen he ran away to Philadelphia, where as an industrious tradesman, printer, and journalist he earned enough to virtually retire from business in his early forties. As a delegate to the Second Continental Congress, Franklin helped prepare the Declaration of Independence. His rise to wealth from humble beginnings and his momentous political and diplomatic roles were enough to ensure his fame. But he also won international renown for his Franklin stove and other inventions, his experiments with electricity, his civic improvements, his philanthropic schemes, his sagacity and wit, and his penetratingly lucid prose. Although a representative of Enlightenment cosmopolitanism-a citizen of the world-Benjamin Franklin has also become a symbol of American civilization. Kenneth Silverman is professor of English at New York University, a fellow of the American Antiquarian Society, and a council member of the Institute for Early American History and Culture. His books and editions include Colonial American Poetry (1968), Timothy Dwight (1969), Selected Letters of Cotton Mather (1971), A Cultural History of the American Revolution (1976), and The Life and Times of Cotton Mather (1984), which won a 1984 Bancroft Prize in American History and a 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Biography.
