The act of including by standers within the scene of an artwork marked an important shift in the ways artists addressed the beholder, as well as a significant transformation of the relationship between images and their viewership. In such works, the "public" in the picture could be seen as a mediating between different times, people, and contents. With The Public in the Picture, contributors describe this shift, with each essay focusing on a specific group of works created at a different moment in history. Together, the contributions explore the political, religious, and social contexts of the publics depicted and relate this shift to the rise of perspectival representation. Biografía del autor:
Beate Fricke is associate professor of medieval art at the University of California, Berkeley, and the author of Fallen Idols, Risen Saints. Urte Krass is assistant professor in the Institute for Art History at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.

Diese Betrachterfiguren agieren als Vermittler zwischen Zeiten, Personen und Inhalten. So schart sich auf den sogenannten 'volkreichen' Kalvarienbergen Publikum um Maria, die Apostel, Longinus und die Schergen; an Grabmälern sind Trauernde zu sehen und auf Kanzelreliefs richten Einzelpersonen ihren Blick auf den Betrachter; auf byzantinischen Darstellungen des Marientodes sowie dann bei Duccio und Giotto folgen Trauernde dem Sarkophag der toten Maria. Während es bereits relativ früh die 'Anderen' gab, z.B. als Gruppen von Fremden, Armen, Kranken, Andersgläubigen oder Feinden, gehören die Figuren der Betrachter zunehmend der Gemeinschaft der zentralen Protagonisten im Bild an. Diese Figuren fördern nicht nur die Aufmerksamkeit für das Ereignis im Bild und überbrücken Zeitdifferenzen, sie fordern auch selbst Aufmerksamkeit ein. Inwieweit lassen diese Erweiterungen des Personals, das die Protagonisten begleitet, Rückschlüsse auf veränderte Bedingungen in der Welt außerhalb des Bildes zu Der vorliegende Band möchte diese Veränderung aus der Perspektive des westlichen Mittelalters, der byzantinischen Kunst, der islamischen Kunst und auch mit Blick auf ihre Vor- und Nachgeschichte diskutieren.
