In this beautifully illustrated volume, Viola (Curator Emeritus of the Smithsonian Institution and former director of the National Anthropological Archives) answers many lingering questions about the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876 by publishing the oral histories previously shared only among tribe members, especially the Cheyenne. He also presents 40 color drawings of the battle by Red Horse, an unknown account of Custer's movements collected in 1908 from the Crow scouts by photographer Edward E. Curtis, new archaelogical artifacts from the Reno battlefield, and recently discovered letters written during the campaign. Contains about 200 maps, photographs, reproductions, and drawings.
