Sylvia M. Standaert s Cerebral Palsy has never deterred her from reaching a goal. She remembers her dad telling her that the nurses told him not to expect her to live through the day, when she was born. She fooled them, and credits her parent s tireless encouragement and dedication to her success and independence. After four years of physical, occupational and speech therapy at the Crippled Children s Foundation in Rock Island, she attended St. Anne grade school in East Moline and Alleman High School in Rock Island. Girl Scouts was a favorite activity in grade school, and it was rare that she missed a home football or basketball game for the Pioneers. In 1967, Father Cleary, the pastor of St. Anne asked her to oversee the library that had just been started at St. Anne grade school, where her mother was a teacher for 16 years, and she has been there ever since. I am starting to see some third generations, and I consider them all, my kids. In 2005, St. Anne merged into Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy. Miss Standaert enjoys working with children from preschool age through 8th grade. No two days are alike, she says and the there s never a dull moment when you are working with kids. A variety of activities keep Miss Standaert busy in her free time reading being one of her favorite pastimes. She has traveled to 46 states, and 12 countries. A favorite highlight of her travels is watching the 4th of July fireworks from the South Lawn of the White House in 2005.
