Novel opens with Diggory Venn riding onto the heath-covered Edgon countryside with Thomasin Yeobright, who is distraught as her marriage to Damon Wildeve is suspended by an error in the marriage certificate. Actually, problems were generated by Wildeve --- infatuated with Eustacia Vye, Wildeve was using propsed wedlock to Thomasin simply to make Eustacia jealous. When Venn learns of the romance between Eustacia and Wildeve, his proposal to Thomasin irejected, he resolves to intervene on her behalf, which he continues throughout the novel. His attempts to persuade Eustacia to allow Wildeve to marry Thomasin comes to naught. Into this chaos, enter other protangonists of family members each with emotional demands, generating further issued. An account of mis-marriages, mis-alignments, and woes.
