The Stone Diaries is the story of one woman's life; a truly sensuous novel that reflects and illuminates the unsettled decades of our century.

Born in 1905, Daisy Goodwill drifts through the chapters of childhood, marriage, widowhood, remarriage, motherhood and old age. Bewildered by her inability to understand her own role, Daisy attempts to find a way to tell her own story within a novel that is itself about the limitations of autobiography.

Carol Shields is an internationally known author who has won many awards for her novels and short stories. The Stone Diaries was the winner of the 1993 Governor General's Award for Fiction, the McNally Robinson Award for Manitoba Book of the Year and was also short-listed for the Booker Prize. Shields has also been chosen as the Canadian Bookseller Association's Author of the Year. Her other books include: Happenstance, The Republic of Love, The Orange Fish, Small Ceremonies, Swann, Various Miracles and The Box Garden. She lives and writes in Winnipeg.
