This updated edition depicts the current status of women worldwide, covering all cultures and countries. Drawing on extensive research, including reports gathered from the 1995 UN conference in Beijing, it covers issues ranging from equality and motherhood, to domestic violence and lesbian rights. Seager has taken into account the changes that have taken place over the last decade, since the book's first publication, further contributing to the book's significance.

Joni Seager currently teaches geography and women's studies at the University of Vermont. A recognised authority in her field, she coauthored, with Ann Olson, the first edition of Women in the World: An International Atlas, and also wrote The Stateof the Environment Atlas (Penguin, 1995). Originally from Canada, she now lives in the USA.
